Colombian composer, psychologist and social worker, Paola M. Marquez earned from Colombian universities her licenses in psychology from Pontific Javeriana Cali, and music composition from Juan N. Corpas, Bogota, as a Summa Cum Laude. She has a Master in composition at Syracuse University as a recipient of the 2008 Heaton Fellowship, and MSW at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor as a recipient of the Eleanor Cranefield Scholarship in 2014.
As part of her artistic and professional development she has published her research in Music Cognition in SACCOM (2008) and her book Mar Azul. She worked as an adjunct professor at Syracuse University, and as social worker for Say Yes Syracuse, Imagine Syracuse, and Matrix Head Start in Detroit, as well music assistant for Musica Mestiza Project lead by composer Gabriela Frank and the University of Michigan and translator for the el Sistema Ann Arbor by Curtis center at UM.
As a composer Paola uses her understanding of human psychology as inspiration for her work creating a unique bridge between art, music and social issues. She has written film, solo, vocal, orchestral and chamber music, much of which has been performed in several cities in Colombia and the United States. Her work makes her the recipient of the Honorable Mention Citation in recognition of Performance and Achievement in the “International Music Prize for Excellence in Composition 2011” competition held in Greece.
Paola, has been the composer in resident at Pelee Island Music Festival in Canada, Detroit Child Chorus, Ruth Ellis Center sponsor by Detroit Chamber Winds and Strings 2014. Syracuse Children’s Chorus, the Tree House Ensemble 2012, Society of New Music from 2009 to 2012, in projects such as Vision of Sound, Rising Stars, and Composers-in-the-Schools. As well commissions by Julliard violinist Artur Kaganovkiev, Kypros Markou Conductor Dearnborn Symphony, French filmmaker Boris Wexler for his movie “Our Fathers.” Currently Paola lives in Michigan and work as an assistant manager at Matrix Head Start meanwhile is working for a new commission for principal percussionist of Detroit Symphony and other musicians.
