NATIONAL PREMIERE OF ‘COMPADRE HUASHAYO,’ PRODUCED BY INTAKE MUSIC

The INTAKE Music Organization presents the national premiere of its production, «Compadre Huashayo,” a documentary that tells the story of musicians who keep their musical heritage alive through the philosophy of two cultures coming together without one subjugating the other. The fi lm is directed by Aric Hartvig from PBS, with original music by American-born composer Gabriela Frank, of Peruvian and Lithuanian descent, and recipient of the 2009 Latin Grammy. The fi lm was recently confi rmed for national distribution on the PBS network

INTAKE APPOINTS DISTINGUISHED ARTIST BOARD

The INTAKE Organization (Instrumentally Native Taking on the Classics) Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Maureen Pavia, artist, philanthropist, and founder of Stamford Gives Back, as chairwoman of its board. In her new role, Pavia has committed to supporting the organization’smission of improving the quality of life for Stamford’s youth by providing access to quality music instruction through the use of native instruments that represent diverse cultural backgrounds.

STAMFORD HOSTS ETHNIC FASHION SHOW

Instrumentally Native Taking on the Classics, a Stamford nonprofit arts organization, presented a fashion show of ethnic outfits and native instruments at Stamford High School Sunday. The event raised funds to provide music scholarships to young children interested in classical music education through native instruments of their cultural background.

STAMFORD’S MAYOR PAVIA MEETS WITH ECUADORIAN QUEEN OF RIOBAMBA

Colorful garments, music, and dance took over the Stamford High School auditorium this Sunday for a Fashion Show of Ethnic Outfits and Native Instruments. The show was put on by the non-profit group INTAKE, which is short for Instrumentally Native Taking on the Classics. INTAKE is an organization that gives stamford youth access to classical music instruction using native instruments that represent their culture. The show was a fundraising event for INTAKE, which took off in May of 2011. Forty-seven children and young adults participated, representing Latin American countries, Europe, and the U.S. through music, dance, and fashion. The show was INTAKE’s first major event in Stamford and INTAKE’s founder, Angelica Durrell, says there are many more to come.

AIRES ANDINOS, EN COMPADRE HUASHAYO

Los violines suenan como charangos. Las flautas como quenas. La percusión… bueno, esta se hace al compás de una marcha ceremonial o un cántico alegre. Algo característico en las composiciones de la estadounidense Gabriela Lena Frank es hacer que los instrumentos clásicos emitan sonidos similares a aquellos a los que ella denomina como «nativos». Esto se puede apreciar en obras como Tres mitos de mi tierra, Haili lírico, o su premiada Danzas Inca (con el que en el 2009 obtuvo el Grammy Latino a Mejor Composición Clásica Contemporánea).
