INTAKE Enriches Stamford's Youth with Music

Stamford, Conn – Latino students learn about native instruments and
cultures through the INTAKE Music Organization, a new program initiative
for the Aspiring Leadership to Action (ALTA) Academy, a program in
partnership with Stamford Public Schools and the Stamford Yerwood Center
designed to empower Latino students and their parents towards excelling
in their education and gaining leadership skills to take on a college
career. A concert will be held in honor of the program’s students and
achievements in playing native instruments. The repertoire will include
original arrangement “Movie Thriller”, made specifically for INTAKE
students. The arrangement is a blend of popular music and classical
tunes to provide a range of what the students enjoy and understand.
INTAKE’s mission to enrich the communities with cultural music inspired
Founder and Artistic Director Angelica Durrell to propose a music class
to the ALTA program at the Stamford Yerwood Center. The partnership
allowed INTAKE to offer native instrument training to students enrolled
in the Academy every Saturday. Forty-five students from Westhill and
Stamford High Schools will learn to play handmade native andean
instruments like the charango, zampoñas, quenas and bombos, every
Saturday for 17 weeks from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. under the instruction of
Alan Silva, a native from Peru.

Angelica Durrell, Founder and Artistic Director of INTAKE Organization
began talks with Stamford Public Schools program coordinators, Juan
Pazmino, in June, for a grant to be a part of ALTA’s curriculum. “As a
Hispanic youth growing up in the Stamford and Norwalk area, I relate to
these kids, and I hope they can find inspiration and guidance from
learning about music and their cultures, “ said Durrell during INTAKE’s
first class on Dec. 3rd. “Through ALTA we have the opportunity to reach
out to this young audience and help foster an understanding of the music
that comes from their cultures and ignite a passion to succeed at
something.”

Stamford Public Schools received funds from the Connecticut State
Department of Education Grant to improve the academic achievement of
Latino students; improve the social/emotional and physical development
of these students; develop their college readiness and increase the
involvement of their parents in the educational process. The program is
offered to over 90 youths and their families on Tuesdays, Thursdays and
Saturday mornings. The program is made possible by the support and
dedication of Juan Pazmino and Mike Meyer from the Stamford Public
Schools and Eugene Campbell at the Yerwood Center, who are supportive of
INTAKE’s mission and their students.
