The INTAKE Organization is a Stamford-based non-profit arts organization that promotes music education through multiculturalism and native instruments. Founded in 2011, INTAKE envisions a new cultural and musical world where the future generations of concert audiences truly reflect our society and are able to experience classical music in its traditional form as well as through the «voices» of their own and of other cultures. The organization’s mission is:
To make classical music relevant to a variety of communities through the use of native instruments, interpretations, and cultural awareness.
INTAKE was founded by violinist and educator, Angelica Durrell, in 2011. The initial idea was explored and began to take shape in October 2009 when the founder met world-renowned composer Gabriela Lena Frank, and MacArthur Fellow, social entrepreneur and visionary, Aaron Dworkin; receiving courage and inspiration to promote native instruments and cultures, and achieve a social impact and cultural relevance through classical music.
In response to the growing numbers of local communities from the diaspora, and an ever-more culturally and musically diverse community, Angelica established the INTAKE organization. During its inaugural year in 2011, INTAKE launched the Native Instrument Academy in Stamford, Connecticut, which immediately provided music education to forty students from the Stamford Public Schools’ ALTA Program, and exposed them to classical music learning through native instruments from their own cultures.
Today, INTAKE’s programs reach over 90 students, as well as printed media coverage of over two thousand readers annually. Since its inaugural year and educational partnerships, the organization has grown to include 5 programming areas: (Click on each line to learn more)
